2009 Chateau Martet. Reserve de Famille. Bordeaux Sainte-Foy AOC. 13.5%

This is 100% Merlot and spent 18 months in new oak barrels

Chateau Martet. Reserve de Famille

I had never heard of this part of Bordeaux before. Quick bit of research shows that the vineyards for this wine sit about 25kms away from Saint Emilion. Another great bit of information is the owners of Chateau Tertre Roteboeuf and Roc de Cambes are consultants here at Chateau Martet.

Dark purple / ruby with deep intensity in appearance.

Clean, pronounced nose of black cherries, sweet black currants, coffeed oak. Hints of chocolates, mint and shaved truffles.

Full bodied on the palate and is jammed full of dark fruits. Blackcurrants, black cherry, toasty cedar, dark chocolates, hint of cinnamon and a minty lift. Well integrated Tannic grip.

I thought this powerful wine was Excellent and showed good balance.

On day 2, with steak, the tannins settle and this sings. Sweet fruit comes to the fore. Long finish and excellent structure.

Great value proposition.

Sample from Airoldi Fine Wines. RRP $68

Tasted 26th & 27th February 2014

I tasted this wine and 3 others over the course of 2 days. On the second day I paired the wines with a simply grilled steak and a truffled salt “dip” to see how it would go with food. All showed they lean towards being more of a food wine.
