Pulled this out to celebrate Father’s day. Houghton Jack Mann is an old favourite of mine and I try to buy most vintages. Bought a fair bit of the 2008 release and am now wondering when the 2009 will be released.
I always seem to have more anticipation when opening a wine that has been resting in the wine fridge for a few years. Will it be any good? How has it changed since I last had it? God, please don’t be corked. The thoughts that run through my head.
Dark chocolates with a bay leaf note. Rhubarb compote with flecks of black olive and chewy graphite. Menthol lift on the nose adds to this wine’s charm.
Very fine grained tannins. Good structure. Acid cleans up the finish nicely.
On the road to maturity, but has many years left in the tank.
Excellent wine. Love it when wine rewards patient cellaring.
Tasted 1st September 2013
Records show I bought this on special back in 2007 for $65 from BWS in Claremont.
